Facts
- The septic tank must be “full” in order to operate (water level should always be just below the outlet or tail pipe).
- The sewage flowing into the tank determines the nature of the bacteria. No two septic tanks operate exactly the same.
- It is important to keep the balance of the tank by minimizing the amount of soaps, detergents and household cleaners going down the drain. Whenever possible “septic-safe or environmentally-friendly” products are strongly recommended.
- Septic tanks are airtight to provide a hospitable environment that decomposing-bacteria thrive in.
- Every bit of water put into the tank must exit the tank. In other words in an efficiently functioning system, flushing the toilet causes 5 gallons of water to enter the septic tank and 5 gallons of effluent to flow out of the tank into the leach area.
