Bacteria
Odors can be associated with septic systems. These odors should not be considered “normal” in a well-maintained septic system in good working order. The major reason for an odor problem is an inadequate level of bacteria in the tank. This can be due to the homeowner’s use of harsh chemicals in the home for cleaning, laundry or home workshop uses. It can also exist as a result of a high level of solids (sludge) in the tank due to a lack of regular maintenance. Odor inside the home can usually be attributed to dried out “p-traps” or improperly set toilet seals.
Many bacteria are present in the materials deposited into the septic system and will thrive under the conditions present in the tank. Some additives advertise that if you use the product you will “eliminate” the need to have your tank pumped. This is never the case… the sludge does not magically disappear. Compare the maintenance of your septic system with the routine maintenance of oil changes for your vehicle. Regular oil changes on your vehicle will ensure it runs well, operate cleaner and extend it’s life. The same line of thought applies to a septic system.
